Social Psychology and the RADIO

We don't always think about how often we hear a song on the radio. Nor do we often think about like or dislike when it comes to the radio. Besides, let's face it the radio doesn't exactly give you a "choice" of what you'll be hearing. As you know, some of us all to well, that one person selects the music and the order of the entire 24 hour day of music played. If you would just stop and think about how that effects your life, maybe then you/we would take a more demanding approach to what we hear. The way radio is setup even among competing stations, they play the same music whether consumers like it or not. Record labels have a vested interest in which songs are played and have the biggest impact on consumer purchasing options.

Your probably wondering what does any of this rant on music and radio have to do with social psychology. Well I'm glad you asked because it has a lot to do with social influence and our unconscious ability to conform without putting up a fight. Let's think about it for a minute, if you hear a song on the radio but genuinely dislike and continue to listen to that station or just that song whenever it is played. Chances are you'll grow to have a higher level of tolerance for the same song, also adding your own personal touch now and then (mainly when stuck in traffic) singing the chorus.

I'm a big supporter of new, bright and different artist so it concerns me when my favorites don't get radio play. Yeah sure in this day of the Internet artist stand a better chance of promoting and starting a buzz from various outlets. But until we're able to bridge the gap between consumer demand for new music and record label mandates, we're going to be in a heap of redundancy in terms of radio. Thus creating a culture of socially conformed individuals not sure of what type of music we really enjoy.
